La Quinta California Real Estate: How to Get Out Red Wine Stains

How to Get Out Red Wine Stains

I had a dinner party last night for a few of my agents and some clients. One of our guests spilled alot of red wine on the shirt of another guest. I had an old remedy to get rid of red wine stains that was given to me by a lady at a wine tasting where I had red wine spilled all over a white sweater. I have used this through the years and it works like magic.

Put ALOT of salt on the red wine and pour on boiling water. Reat if necessary a few times. It works like magic. You can see it disappear.

I even used this on light colored carpet at a party when a guest spilled red wine. One of my agents suggested I share this tip on Active Rain.

Lori,

Sounds like something you could send to your clients in a newsletter or postcard.

Hi Lori,

This is a great tip; one I've used many times. But, I never poured boiling water over it. I used cold sparkling water - something about the fizz that lifted the red coloring from the stain.  Thanks for the pos!

Hope I never have to do this, but good to know

I can vouch for this method - it TOTALLY works!  One holiday I spilled red wine on a light tan carpet in the condo we were renting.  While my husband was panicking and getting towels, sprays and sponges.  I calmly got salt and began pouring it onto the stain and it wicked up the wine like magic!  I didn't pour any water over it, because there was no need. . .all i did was vacuum up the extra salt (after scooping away the wine soaked clumps).  There wasn't a trace of red (or pink) in the carpet - took a LOT of salt though.
